Types of Pre-Launch Tests

Before sending a rocket into space, there are a bunch of tests that need to be done to make sure everything’s good to go. These tests come in all different shapes and sizes like the Wet Dress Rehearsals (WDR), Static Fire Tests, Functional Tests, Integrated Tests, Flight Simulations, and Spin Prime Tests, among others. We will focus on the Spin Prime Tests, Static Fire Tests, and Wet Dress Rehearsals.

The Spin Prime Test

SpaceX uses a "spin prime test" to test rocket engines without igniting the propellant. Instead, the turbine is brought up to operational speed using cold gas from outside the engine.

The purpose of this test is to ensure that all the engine systems are working correctly and can reach the necessary speeds for operation or spin without igniting fully.

The Static Fire Test

A static fire test is an essential ground test for a rocket’s engines, where they’re ignited while the rocket remains still on the ground. This test is a crucial part of making sure the engines, systems, and equipment all work correctly before an actual launch.

During the static fire test, the rocket stays securely in place while its engines are fired up to mimic how they’ll work during a real flight. This process gives important information about how the engines perform, how much thrust they generate, and other important details.

Wet Dress Rehearsal

A wet dress rehearsal is a crucial pre-launch test that mimics the steps of a rocket launch countdown, including filling the rocket’s tanks. Unlike a static fire test where the engines are ignited, in a wet dress rehearsal, the engines remain off. This test lets SpaceX check the entire launch process, from fueling the rocket to pre-launch tasks, without the actual liftoff.
